Caption most of your photos, not all
There is a peak, and it isn't 100%.

Peak at 51-75%
Based on
14,800 listings
Key finding: Booking conversion peaks when 51 to 75 percent of your photos are captioned, at 0.88 percent, compared to 0.56 percent for listings with no captions at all.
The short version
Captions help, but only up to a point. Listings that captioned most of their photos converted better than listings that captioned none. Yet listings that captioned every single photo saw conversion fall back to 0.74 percent. The sweet spot is captioning the photos that need context and leaving the obvious ones alone.
The data
Across 14,800 listings, booking conversion moved with the share of captioned photos:
No captions: 0.56 percent conversion.
51 to 75 percent of photos captioned: 0.88 percent conversion. This is the peak.
Every photo captioned (100 percent): 0.74 percent conversion.
So going from no captions to captioning three-quarters of your photos is a real lift. Pushing past that, all the way to 100 percent, gives some of the gain back.
Why it works
A caption earns its place when it sells a feature or answers a question a guest would otherwise have to guess at. It tells the story the photo alone cannot. But when every photo carries a caption, the useful ones get buried in noise. Guests skim, and a caption on an obvious shot of a couch or a closed door adds nothing and slows them down. The peak at 51 to 75 percent suggests guests respond to captions that add information, not to captions for their own sake. More is not better once you are past the photos that actually need words.
What to actually do
Caption the photos that sell a feature or answer a common question. Think the view, the workspace, the hot tub, the layout quirk.
Leave the obvious shots uncaptioned. A plain bedroom or a bathroom does not need a label.
Aim to caption roughly half to three-quarters of your gallery, not all of it. If you are captioning everything, cut the ones that say nothing.
The honest caveats
This is a correlational finding, not a controlled experiment. It shows that listings captioning 51 to 75 percent of their photos tend to convert better, not that captions alone caused the difference. Hosts who caption thoughtfully may also do other things well, and that can lift the numbers. The conversion rates here are small in absolute terms, which is normal for this stage of the funnel. Treat the pattern as a strong signal about where to spend effort, not a guarantee.
Methodology
The finding is based on 14,800 listings, drawn from IntelliHost and Key Data in 2026. We measured the share of a listing’s photos that carried a caption and compared booking conversion across those shares. The comparison groups listings by how much of their gallery is captioned, from none through to every photo.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of my Airbnb photos should have captions?
Around 51 to 75 percent. That range showed the highest booking conversion at 0.88 percent, better than both no captions and captioning everything.
Should I caption all of my listing photos?
No. Listings that captioned 100 percent of their photos converted at 0.74 percent, below the 0.88 percent peak. Caption most of them, not all.
Do photo captions actually help bookings?
They correlate with better conversion when used well. Listings with no captions converted at 0.56 percent, while those captioning most photos reached 0.88 percent. This is a correlation, so treat it as a strong signal rather than proof.
