The 4.5-star cliff

Below 4.5, you are essentially invisible.

The 4.5-star cliff

2.7x visibility

Based on

24,544 properties

Key finding: Listings rated 4.5 stars and up get 2.7x more daily first-page search impressions than listings rated 4.0 to 4.4, based on 24,544 properties.

The short version

There is a hard visibility cliff at 4.5 stars. Cross below it and the search algorithm quietly stops showing you. That matters because impressions are the top of your funnel. No amount of smart pricing or listing polish can help if guests never see the listing in the first place. Protecting your 4.5 floor is the highest-leverage thing you can do.

The data

Across 24,544 properties, we compared daily first-page search impressions for two rating bands.

  • Listings rated 4.5 and above earned 2.7x more daily first-page impressions than listings rated 4.0 to 4.4.

  • The jump is concentrated right at the 4.5 line, which is why we call it a cliff rather than a gentle slope.

Why it works

Search ranking rewards listings that are likely to convert a browsing guest into a booking. Rating is one of the loudest quality signals a guest sees, so the algorithm leans on it to decide who gets shown first. When your rating sits at or above 4.5, you clear the bar and stay in the first-page pool. Slip to 4.4 and you fall out of that pool, which starves the listing of the impressions it needs to earn bookings and new reviews. That can turn into a slow downward spiral where fewer views means fewer reviews means even less visibility.

What to actually do

  1. Treat 4.5 as a floor you defend, not a target you drift toward. Watch your rating weekly and act the moment it trends down.

  2. Fix the operational issues that produce low reviews first: cleanliness, accurate listing photos and descriptions, check-in friction, and slow responses.

  3. If you are already below 4.5, focus on stacking recent strong stays to pull the average back up, since fresh reviews move the number faster than old ones.

The honest caveats

This is a correlation, not proof of cause. We observed that higher-rated listings get far more impressions, but we did not run a controlled experiment that isolates rating as the sole driver. Highly rated hosts may also do other things well that help visibility. The finding is drawn from the properties in our sample and reflects their markets and time period. Read it as a strong signal to protect your rating, not as a guarantee that raising a rating by a tenth of a point will multiply impressions by a fixed amount.

Methodology

The analysis covers 24,544 properties using combined IntelliHost and Key Data measurements from 2026. We compared daily first-page search impressions between listings rated 4.5 and above and listings rated 4.0 to 4.4. Impressions reflect how often a listing appeared on the first page of guest search results. Comparing within these tight rating bands isolates the visibility gap that appears at the 4.5 line.

Frequently asked questions

How much more visibility do 4.5-star listings get?

About 2.7x more. Listings rated 4.5 and up earned 2.7x more daily first-page search impressions than listings rated 4.0 to 4.4 across 24,544 properties.

What happens if my rating drops below 4.5?

You fall off a visibility cliff. The data shows first-page impressions drop sharply below 4.5, so the algorithm effectively shows your listing to far fewer guests once you slip under that line.

Is fixing my rating more important than adjusting my price?

Protecting your rating comes first. If your rating falls below 4.5 and impressions collapse, guests never see your listing, so pricing and listing changes have nothing to work with. Get back above the 4.5 floor, then optimize price.
